King Music Concert – Audience, 2007
Lyceum:
I attended a couple of the lyceum offerings in 1973 or 1974, when I was a student at the Junipero Serra School in Carmel.  I signed up for beginning photography and science with a friend of mine from school.  Although I enjoyed the science workshop a great deal and learned how to dissect a frog (far above my grade level), the photography class had the greatest impact on me.

The beginning photography class may have been the most exciting learning experience of my young life!  I must have been in 6th grade or so.  I was especially struck over receiving an inexpensive 35 mm cameras to keep - I could take pictures just like a grownup and be a photographer!  It was very empowering.  In addition to learning how to shoot pictures, we learned how to develop our own black and white film in a developing bag.  It was magic.  We wandered the gardens of the Mission looking for leaves and other objects to frame on our photo sensitive paper to learn how light works to make an impresssion.  I pursued photography as a hobby through high school, during difficult years of growing up.  It was a healthy outlet for me.  For my high school graduation present, my parents bought me a real 35mm - a Pentax which I took on a week-long backpacking trip through Yosemite which was also a part of my graduation present.  I don't think I ever would have learned about photography or developed such an interest in it without the help of the Lyceum!  Thank you!

***LYCEUM NEWS***

MUSEUM ART ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (MAE): Get excited because The Lyceum is expanding our MAE program.  We are now partnering with five museums to offer our multi-session art programs!  Look for Fall 2006 classes at Monterey County Agriculture and Rural Life Museum in King City, National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, Maritime Museum in Monterey, Monterey Museum of Art and P.G. Museum of Natural History.  Our museum programs typically follow the theme of the museum (art and agriculture, drawing your feathered friends, painting ships, and more), and students also tour the museum for inspiration!

SCIENCE, ART, AND MUSIC PROGRAMS (SAMI): We are pleased to have grown our SAMI Programs this spring by offering multi-session Science, Art, and Music After-school Programs at 18 schools throughout Monterey County.  You will now see us at 9 Salinas and South County locations, in addition to our 9 Peninsula partner-locations!  The following schools are already signed up for SAMIs sponsored by the Lyceum: Bay View Elementary, Mission School, Mission Park School, Toro Park School, Olson, Foothill Elementary, Colton School, Washington Union, Carmel River School, Martin Luther King Jr. School, La Mesa, Soledad High School, Kammann Elementary, Marina del Mar School, Laurelwood School, Rose Ferrero, and Main Street Middle School. Call us to set up a program near you!

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your support throughout the years. We look forward to partnering with you to make 2007 a year of fun, hands-on learning for our Monterey County students!

P.S. Please consider joining our current donors by supporting our hands-on enrichment programs.
